As web developers we are constantly asked by our clients for flash-based websites. They are understandably attracted to the “bling” factor of flash-based sites. Those hypnotic blurs, fades, and slides dance their pretty little images past our eyes and we think “ooh, aah, I want it now! Naturally any business owner would want potential customers to have that exact reaction when opening up their site. But the practical, nuts and bolts technical reasons not to use flash far out weigh the wow factor. Here are the top 5 reasons why a Flash-based website is a bad idea.

1. Invisible to search engines. Flash is essentially just fancy graphics, and search engines like Google do not see graphics. In order for a search engine to index your site it relies on textual information and “tags” essentially code, to tell it what elements and information your site contains. If your site is primarily graphics and flash elements, then search engines will rank it well below similar sites with more text.

2. Flash does not provide reference information for site analytics. Most web developers will embed a JavaScript code in the header or footer of your site to track the sites visitors and their behavior on the site, such as which pages were viewed, for how long, and at what point did the visitor exit the site. If you own a website then you should already know that tracking page views and bounce rate data is essential to tweaking your site for maximum exposure.

3. Needs constant updating. How many times have you opened up a site only to see a message informing you that you have to update to the latest Flash version to view the site. Even if the error message is legit ( and more often than not, they are cleverly disguised Trojans waiting to attack your computer) then you have to go to the Adobe site, click to download…agree to terms…(which include agreeing to let Adobe install spyware on your computer)… wait for the software to update… restart…..

Who needs the hassle! Most users will simply back out of the site rather than go to the time and trouble. Also if you need to update information on your site, then you  better have a Flash developer handy as any changes require complex coding, and you will most likely have to pay a premium for that.

4. Does not conform to standard web practices. No cutting and pasting, no back button, no bookmarking a single page within the site, etc. Flash doesn’t work with the way we actually use the Internet. People are viewing your web site for THEIR convenience, why make it hard for them. As a customer myself,  I feel if a company’s site is difficult to navigate they must also be difficult to do business with.

5. Not viewable on iPhones, iPads, or other mobile devices. More and more people are using phones and other portable devices to access the Internet. If you are using flash you are inaccessible to a huge percentage of Internet users.

As you can see, using Flash to create your website makes that old adage hold true:  All Flash, no substance.

Content is extremely undervalued. You want to look for indices of high quality Web sites.

Google is “submarine crawling” where they query a search form or execute JavaScript to find deep web content that isn’t linked from the site itself. If you can find out where Google is doing this type of crawling, you can assume that the content is trusted by Google.

How do you find these sites?

Do a [site:] search. That will work for one site, but what if you’re looking at an entire industry? You can look for a footprint.

A footprint is an identifying characteristic that many web sites share. If you look at a CMS, there will be footprints attached to it. He shows us the following footprint for a high quality WordPress blog.

If you change the WHOIS and the hosting, you can get the PR values reset.

To get around this you can use a trust. A trust is legal mechanism where one person holds legal title to property while another person is the beneficiary of the property. This allows you to take control of the site without changing the WHOIS information.

Why incoming links are import? Because search engine spiders do only two things:

• Follow links
• Collect text

PERIOD! That’s it! The number and quality of the sites that link to you is all that the search engine has to determine the quality of the results returned to the user.

Links that improve search engine rankings will be those that the engines feel are a trustworthy indicators of quality. These can and will be different for every site. Not all links are equal.

Page Rank is only one component, and not the most important one. The more links you get from your own community the better.

Reciprocal links are not trusted, the “You link to my crap and I will link to your crap” trick may have worked in 1999 but the search engines figured that one out a long time ago.

Writing copy for your website or blog can be a daunting task even for the most confident writer. (Which most of us are not). Writing for search engine optimization can be especially intimidating, as most bloggers don’t even know what the search engine is searching for.

Search engines seek to find the most relevant, sites for a particular keyword. To do this the search engine looks for “expert” content. That’s why the most successful websites contain multiple blog entries which are updated regularly.

For search engine optimization, (helping the search engine find your site and give it a high ranking), it’s actually key phrases that are key. That’s because single words don’t count. When you are searching for a topic in a search engine, you would usually enter 2-3 words that focus your search to your specific needs. Instead of searching for “movies” you will narrow your search to “new horror movies”, or “movies times, Amarillo” . To determine what key phrases you should use for your website, simply ask yourself, or better yet your customers, what key phrases you would search to find your product or service.

For the most successful search engine optimization, you should select 3-4 key phrases that describe in full detail your products, services, or topic.

Search engine key words should be descriptive and specific. For example, use “commercial and residential rental property in Amarillo” instead of “rental property” If you write descriptively you can get more key phrases in your article without it seeming spammy.

Be careful not to overdue it. If you are using the same key phrases over and over again it will turn off the reader and dilute the effectiveness of your copy. You should not use more than 4-5 keywords. The goal is to establish a theme in your writing, not to stuff the site with key words- a practice that cause search engines to give you a lower ranking.

As with any good writing the overall tone should be conversational. Write like you speak. To make sure your copy is clear and not overly stuffed with key words the best practice is to read it aloud. If it sounds repetitive then you have probably over used your key phrases.

Also be on the lookout for words with multiple spellings – for example, work place and workplace. Don’t use more than one form of the word in your site.

The most important thing to remember is your not writing for search engines. You are writing for readers. So keep your writing fresh, relevant and interesting so your readers will keep coming back.
