Kenny vs. the MAC Part Deux

I was scanning through my old post and noticed that I had been a MAC user for 14 months. I had expected to make a lot of noise and freak out but the fact is I just love this thing! I am now an unapologetic Apple fan boy. I have to whole family now iPhone, iPad and MacBook Pro. Small Medium and Large! I even bought the stock.

I love my MacBook Pro. I want to be buried with it. I have never loved like this before. Yes the MAC crashes on occasion. It’s a computer. But it is just not as frustrating. Making a video on a PC regardless of the software was pure agony. Now it is almost fun and it takes far less time. I may have used Photoshop maybe twice in the last year. iPhoto does 99.9% of what I need it to do. I still use Windows for a few apps that I am too damn cheap to replace. I still use Adobe Dreamweaver and Illustrator for Windows for most web design work. I have been the king of Microsoft Excel (Numbers sucks) since the 80’s so I still use the Windows version. I actually prefer the other iWork (Apple’s Office Suite) applications Pages and Keynote to their MS-Office counterparts so I don’t feel like it makes sense to spend money on Office for the MAC. The thing just works for the most part.

The revolutionary nature of the iPad is astounding. This is by far the most powerful computer I have ever used and those of you who have known me for a while may scratch their heads at that one. WHY? This elegant and I dare say inexpensive little device takes more industries that we know out in the back yard and shoots them in the head! You could not do this much damage with a nuclear weapon and it screws allot of the right people! Music publishing….Dead!Book printing….Dead! News media domination by anyone…Dead. I can get any media I want delivered in seconds. I am not getting off my butt and going to a store for that stuff anymore. My local Book, Music and Video store may get a visit from me at Christmas now. Probably to buy iTunes gift cards. I know that many of you are out there saying “but I love the FEEL of a book”. I also remember professional photographers saying film would never be replaced. Try to find 35 mm film.

Even with its flaws the iPhone 4 is a smash hit with very few actual complaints. Recently I updated my iPhone 3GS (I used to be so cool) to the IOS 4.01 update. This is the update that fixed the signal bars software glitch and boy did it explain a lot. Turns out the iPhone was giving AT&T way to much credit as to signal strength. Recently I had been having trouble with dropped calls in my living room for some reason. The call would drop I would look at the signal strength four bars…. Bravo Sierra! Now when I drop a call it shows one or no bars. Just in my living room. How convenient. Seams to be worst at my desk. But I’m not bitter!

All in all it has been a great year. I love my new electronic family and I weep for companies that have to compete against Apple.

Due to explosive growth in the internet marketing side of our business we decided we could better serve our clients through the formation of the new company which will concentrate on internet marketing solutions. The new team will be lead by Kenneth Jackson and Keran Krane.

Kenny vs. the MAC

I can’t stands it no mo! My lowly Dell Inspiron is dying a slow painful death! It was an inexpensive computer I only paid about $900.00 for it. I have had it for just over a year. I have been using Microsoft products almost exclusively for over 25 years. The news is I am replacing it with a MAC PowerBook Pro.

Last week I bought an iPhone. For the past two years I have been using a Palm Treo 750. I purchased it just before Search Engine Strategies San Jose 2007. My phone had died and I had to replace it now. At the conference Marisa Myer of Google while delivering her keynote address demonstrated her iPhone prototype and I felt sick! I knew that I had missed out but the Palm 750 at the time was an expensive state of the art phone and I am cheap. So last week when the iPhone 3 GS came out I was in line at AT&T at 7:00 am to get my new, state of the art, 32 GB iPhone 3 GS and found eternal bliss. Until I started to sink my music collection. It took forever because my laptop kept crashing. No fault of iTunes.

The problem was not with the iPhone it was with my flaming piece of S**t laptop! For a few weeks now my computer has been doing strange things. The cursor has been tripping and when I play anything Flash my computer craps out. No blue screen of death. No recovery information at all except a cryptic message referring to the Dell wireless drive which turned out to be BS. If this was a customer computer I would have backed it up zapped it and gone on with my life. But no! This is my computer and I am going to figure it out. After probably 20 hours of virus scans, hardware scans, software reinstalls etc. I found that it crashed slower at low temperatures. So its hardware! Fan is working computer just dying!

So the other night I was working along and WHAM! Dies at a most inopportune time and the second the computer came back up I did a rash thing! I went to Apple.com and bought a 15” PowerBook Pro.

This is the first MAC I have owned since the 80s. I don’t know how this is going to work out but I have had it with cheap computers and most things Microsoft.

In the last year I have moved almost all of my internet work off of Windows platforms. I have one server with a couple of sites that are not producing and complicated to move and that is it! In the last year, I have moved all ecommerce to Magento Commerce on Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP, (LAMP) servers hosted at Simple Helix. I am now using WordPress for all of our professionally managed blogs.

On the Mobile and Server fronts I have pretty much moved completely away from Microsoft products. I have only installed two Windows Servers this year and we are looking into replacing future server hardware with cloud computing. We stopped selling Microsoft Exchange Server the day Google Apps for Domains came out. We have now run our biggest customers email systems on Google Apps for over a year and they are thrilled with not only the cost but the features and performance.

So the last step is the Desktop!

Google Reaches Out to Small Business In this ever changing hi-tech world many small businesses get left in the dust. But Google has built much of their success on reaching out to the little guy. With tools such as AdWords, AdSense, Wiki’s, and the ever-evolving slew of beta programs-Google is equipping small business owners with the tools they need to stay competitive.

I recently talked with Rod and Vanda Lancour of Support Hose Store about how they utilize Google services to increase their business. Rod and Vanda run a small, internet-based business that sells medical support hose and stockings. They have been working with Google for years to keep their website competitive- and it’s working; The Support Hose Store is consistently at the top of Google searches for their keywords.

How do they do it?

By taking advantage of all Google has to offer. Support Hose Store makes it a point to take advantage of any and all beta programs that Google is offering. They communicate with Google staffers often and got Google to assign them a 3-member team to provide support and feedback…just by asking.

Recently they were asked to fill out a survey rating Google’s products and services. They sent it in-never expecting any kind of response aside from the confirmation e-mail, but instead the couple was contacted by Google and invited to visit the massive hi-tech campus for one-on-one strategy meetings with members of the Google staff.

Google Team Talks Strategy with Business Owners

During their 3-day stay, Rod and Vanda sat down with Google staffers and went over the history of Support Hose Store’s marketing and ad campaigns, getting feedback on what was working- and what was not. They went through the website page-by page offering expert pointers and critiques.

Rod and Vanda were so pleased with their Google encounter; they plan to make the trip an annual event. Meanwhile, they continue to hear from their Google team members an average of once a week. “Google is not static…it evolves weekly, some other ideas are coming out, some other betas, it’s hard to keep up with.” Rod believes it’s that attention to service that will keep Google, and Support Hose Store, a leg up on the competition.
